Darkness Rising: Subclassing Information

Introduction to Subclassing

Have you ever wished that your Warrior could cast a bolt at his enemies? Want to give your caster the ability to heal? Champion levels, through use of the subclassing system, allow players to broaden their characters by adding abilities that are not normally available to their character’s class.

-          For each champion level, you receive one champion point that can be used to purchase abilities through the Subclassing system. At champion level 5, the character has five champion level points to spend on subclassing abilities.

-          Subclass abilities are organized into different layouts for each base class of your realm. Once a character is champion level 1, you can interact with the base trainer to view the subclass window for that base class.

-          Characters can purchase abilities from any base class trainer but their own. For example, an Eldritch cannot view the subclassing window or purchase abilities from the Magician base class trainer. Special Note: Vampiirs are considered as a member of the Guardian base class, for purposes of subclassing.

-          Each ability in the subclass costs one champion point. In each subclass, there are several ability lines. There are two main types of ability lines that you will see in subclass layouts: linear and branching.

Example of a linear ability line

Ability A

|

Ability B

|

Ability C

|

Ability D

|

Ability E

Ability purchases with the linear ability line follow a top-down progression. This means that you must purchase the previous (topmost) before you can purchase the next ability. Example: In order to purchase Ability D, you must first purchase Ability A, B, and C.

Example of a branching ability line

Ability A

Ability B

Ability C

Ability E

Ability purchases with the branching ability line follow a top-down progression for either side of the branch. Example: In order to purchase Ability C, you must purchase both Ability A and Ability B on the left side of the branch OR Ability A and Ability B on the right side of the branch.

Subclassing FAQ

Q: Can I respec my subclassing abilities?

A: Yes, you can purchase a respec stone from the Quartermaster NPC in the King’s throne room.

Q: How do I cast these subclass abilities if I don’t have power or concentration?

A: Once you are champion level 1, any class that does not have a power or concentration pool will receive one. Your power pool will also grow slightly with each champion level.

Q: How powerful are subclass abilities?

A: Subclass abilities are designed to be low level abilities that complement, not substitute, abilities from other classes. The abilities are roughly equivalent to a level 20-30 ability that a class normally receives through leveling or specialization.

Q: But if they are low level abilities, will the subclass spells be resisted a lot?

A: Since spell level is used to determine spell resist, subclass spells have a modified spell level so they can be used against high level targets. The spell level for most subclass spells is level 50, for purposes of resists.

Q: Do I have to pick only one subclass or can I purchase abilities from more than one base trainer?

A: The subclassing system gives you freedom of choice in whether you want to place all five points into one subclass or spread your points amongst many subclasses. The only rules in place are for the purchasing of abilities in the line (see the Introduction to Subclassing examples) and that you cannot purchase from your own subclass (base trainer).

Q: Will subclassing spells stack with spells from other classes?

A: Subclassing spells are set up with exactly the same behaviors as the spells of the classes of that base class receive. They do not have any other special stacking behaviors with other spells of the same type.

Q: Do subclass styles require a particular weapon?

A: Subclass styles can be used with any weapon. Additionally, when you reach Champion Level 3, you will gain the ability wield the mainhand weapon types (see below for list) for your realm and the ability to equip a small shield.

Albion: Thrust, Crush, Slash

Midgard: Axe, Sword, Hammer

Hibernia: Blades, Blunt, Pierce

*Please note that this ability to wield the weapon does not increase your damage/variance with the weapon type, like putting spec points into a weapon line would. This ability is the basic “you can equip the weapon” ability.

Q: Does a Vampiir get a special power pool that does not degrade for subclassing abilities?

A: No, the Vampiir must use his existing power pool to cast subclassing abilities. Each champion level increases the Vampiir’s base power pool (the total amount of power that can be accumulated).

Q: Can Vampiirs powertap me when I get a power pool?

A: Yes, they can. The power pool received is the same pool other classes use, you just have a smaller version of it.
